Isla Saona

Located 19 kilometers south of the mainland, the beautiful beaches of Isla Saona attract more visitors than all the Dominican national parks combined. A protected area of 110 km2 and part of the Cotubanamá National Park, Saona is a dreamy tropical escape, where vast beaches of brilliant white sand and its giant coconut palms seem to melt in iridescent turquoise waters. Day trips to enjoy the beaches can be made through a variety of options ranging from speedboats to catamarans. Sailing along the impressive landscape of the Saône is something worth doing. Most excursions depart from the beach town of Bayahibe. Saona excursions include a stop at Palmilla, a stretch of white sand with a large natural pool, and another stop at Mano Juan, the only populated part of this island. Saona Island is also the most important turtle nesting site in the Dominican Republic.
